Project RMSS

Since we moved into this house, Sarah has made some very tasty things in our little kitchen. She works hard in there, and I am very grateful. So, when she asked me to do something for her that would make it easier for her to make the foods I enjoy so much, well, I couldn't really say no. So began project RMSS-Raise Microwave Sarah Said.

First, lets start with a before picture.

Notice how the microwave hung below the cabinets a few inches. This left very little room, especially for the large pots and her canning stuff. The back burners were almost useless.

This project started like every other home improvement job. Take it apart.

With the microwave and the cabinet removed I am was ready to start fun stuff. Notice the beautiful existing electrical work! The old cabinet had the box mounted on the outside of the wall. I'm guessing the microwave was an afterthought.

I removed the sheet rock to find, insulation, my favorite. I knew this was going to be messy. It doesn't seem to matter how hard you try to keep this stuff clean, it ends up everywhere.

Insulation removed, new sheet rock lid and a hole for a new electrical box.

Some wiring and some mud and this thing is almost looking like it might work. After a few more coats of mud and some paint it was ready to reinstall.

Rehang cabinet, check. Reinstall microwave, check.

Notice the nice new electrical in a recessed box. This thing used to take up half the cabinet and didn't look all that safe.

And finally, the finished product!

Our kitchen is now ready for some serious food making good times. Now the light under the microwave actually lights up the kitchen well enough to make a midnight snack. Alright honey, what's next?
